Wright Style vs. simple plate

Posted: October 8, 2011 in Uncategorized

I was a bit frustrated with the weld up on the flat plate fork ends that I used for Matt’s bike.

They work just fine but they are a pain to deal with and the end result is not as clean as the Wright style fork ends. With the flat plate style the builder has to bend to fit the seat stay angle, slot the stays, and then weld it up. With flat plate it is hard to make the weld look good. The Wright style is much less complex to fit up and results in a joint that looks better.

These fork ends are called Wright style after the Wright brothers because prior to building flying machines they built bicycles and used a similar style. For welding the “hooded” design of Wright styles looks better and is easier to work with. The ones I used on Matt’s frame are simple flat plate and while they get the job done they don’t bring much style to the table.

The Wright style provide a clean surface for a T weld and makes it easier to fit the tube. I am looking forward to using them next time I build a track bike or single speed road. The Wright style costs about twice as much but I think they are worth it.
